ocr: Since 1888 Nauru has been exploited by the Germans, British, Australians, New Zealanders, and recently by Nauruans themselves, for its valuable phosphate reserves. Extraction, which took out most ofthe center ofthe island, has occurred at a fast rate, and the deposits are due to run out in 1995.Nauru has no other resources. The island lis entirely dependent on outside energy supplies and the cost of oilis 50% higher than the Pacitic average as Nauru does not lie on any shipping routes. Most electricity is producedby small diesel generators.
